14. Life Below Water

14.4. Water sensitive waste disposal

14.4.1. Water discharge guidelines and standards

Residual water from AC is contained inside gallons. This residual water will be reused for watering plants, radiator water, and cleaning toilets. There are several reasons why we chose these methods for reusing the residual water:

  • Watering plants: residual water from AC has a very low to almost no minerals, just like distilled water but not as clean. This kind of water could be reused to water plants that cannot tolerate mineral water, such as carnivorous plants. Carnivorous plants are also known to have a bad reaction towards chlorine that is usually found in the faucet water, but cannot be found in residual water from AC.
  • Radiator water: rather than mineral water, it is better to use residual water from AC as radiator water because it can help the radiator to maintain cold temperature and keep the engine in good condition. Thus, it will indirectly decrease expenses for car services. Using the residual water from AC for radiator water could be changed every two months.
  • Cleaning toilets: there are some elements inside the residual water from AC that could help remove stubborn yellow stains in the toilet. It could be used by pouring the residual water to the toilet and let it sit for a night, then in the morning scrub it like usual. This will help to make the toilets appear cleaner as well as kill the bacteria inside the toilet.

Other liquid waste at the Faculty of Psychology is disposed through a concrete septic tank to prevent any leakage into the ground.

14.4.2. Action plan to reducing plastic waste

The Faculty of Psychology tries to reduce plastic waste by requesting its staff and students to use reusable items, like tumblers and cloth bags. By using reusable items, we could reduce using disposable plastic items thus reducing plastic waste.

14.5. Maintaining a local ecosystem

14.5.5. Watershed management strategy

The Faculty of Psychology has water paths from the river in the University of Indonesia. We use this water for watering plants around the faculty by pumping it using a water pumping machine.
