History

The birth of Psychology Education in Indonesia was preceded by a scientific speech by Prof. Dr. Slamet Iman Santoso in his inauguration as Professor of the University of Indonesia at the Anniversary of the University of Indonesia in 1952 at the UI Faculty of Engineering in Bandung (now ITB).

In the speech, he among others suggested the use of psychological examinations to detect the right man on the right place, and avoid the right man on the wrong place, the wrong man on the right place, and the wrong man on the wrong place. As a continuation of the speech, within the Ministry of Education, Teaching, and Culture (abbreviated as the Ministry of PP&K), on March 3, 1953 a Psychology Assistant Course was held, chaired by Prof. Dr. Slamet Iman Santoso.

Shortly after that, still within the Ministry of PP&K, the Institute of Psychology was established, which later changed its status to an Educational Institution of Psychological Assistants which is directly located under the leadership of the University of Indonesia. In 1955, Psychology Education Assistant Psychology changed its status to Bachelor of Psychology Education, which is administratively under the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia.

In the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching & Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 108049/U.U. it was stated that the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia began on July 1, 1960. Thus, 1960 was the year the birth of the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia, with its first Dean, Prof. Dr. Slamet Iman Santoso.

Until 2014, the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia held 2 study programs, namely the Psychology Study program (for Bachelor, Masters, Doctoral levels), and study of Professional Psychology (for Master level). The Bachelor’s Degree Psychology Study Program initially consisted of 4 class programs, namely Regular S1, Extension S1, Special International S1 (in collaboration with the University of Queensland, Austalia), and Parallel S1. However, since 2009 the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia no longer organizes the Extension S1 class program. Then in 2000 the Applied Psychology Study Program (for the master level) was started.
